Teacher’s Corner - Barnaby

October 13, 2024

We sat down for a Q&A with Barnaby, a dedicated teacher of over 20 years from Waikato, New Zealand. He shares how his journey with Teacher’s Buddy has not only transformed his time spent on planning and admin, but also given him more freedom.

Hi Barnaby!

Can you share your teaching journey with us;

"I have been a teacher for over 20 years. I started with Drama, Dance, and Media Studies. Then later in my career, Design and Visual Training and Digital Technologies. I have also been HOD of Dance, HOF Performing Arts and Director of ICT."

Tell us about the time you’re saving with Teacher’s Buddy?

"Teacher’s Buddy is a starting block. It understands what I want from my context and then does the legwork for me. The fact that I can format the output in Teacher’s Buddy or save it as a Google Doc means no more copying, pasting, and reformatting. Because it is so quick, I can even create new or adjusted content on the fly if my class takes a different direction (which can often happen). Teacher's Buddy is like having my own personal assistant 24/7."

What’s your most used feature or tool on Teacher's Buddy?

"Definitely 'Unit Plan', as this is usually my starting point, and from here, I use the secondary prompts (like lesson plan or worksheet) which creates further materials from the original output."

Do you still feel like it’s ‘Barnaby’ teaching while having help with planning?

"Yes, absolutely! Teacher's Buddy just allows me to do my planning quicker. I appreciate how it provides a new approach to the content I have used for years, providing alternatives and opening up aspects of the context I haven't considered.”

What are your tips for teachers getting started with Teacher's Buddy?

"Always take advantage of the secondary prompts. Imagine a tree with the trunk being Teacher’s Buddy, rooted in your local curriculum. Then the first or Level 1 prompt is the starting point, like the main branches of a tree. They set the foundation for the materials you'll create. Next there are the smaller branches which are the secondary or Level 2 Prompts that grow out from the main branches. They add more details and specific elements to your materials, just like smaller branches grow out from the main ones."

Why use Teacher's Buddy when there are other AI platforms available?

"This is the best place for you to engage with GenAI. It's safe, structured and localised. It will be particularly beneficial to beginning teachers, helping them generate ideas and cope with the admin workload. For established teachers, it's energising and provides new approaches to old content."
